The Small Things Count

The Small Things Count

How often do we think about the small things in life? Do the small things count?

As I sat in church this Sabbath with my head bowed, when my eyes opened, a small movement was noted out of the corner of my eye.

Slowly approaching my pew was a humble bee. This tiny creature appeared weak and was stumbling along coming straight toward me.

It attempted to climb up but kept tumbling back to the floor. My heart melted as I took an offering envelope from the pew before me and gently guided the little bumble onto the paper.

The bee walked along the paper but never attempted to fly. Making my way outside with this precious cargo teetering on the edge, I found some clover and gently placed the bee on the flower.

He immediately began to eat and wishing him well, I returned to my seat inside.

Our service ended less than a half hour later and I was eager to get outside to see if my little friend was still there.

Walking outside and down the ramp, searching the area where I had deposited the little fellow. There he was, flitting around from one flower to the next. I was happy to see that he was alive and recovering.

Timing Is Everything

This small act gave me a good feeling as if I was meant to be there at that specific moment to save that bee. Have you ever had moments like these?

Some people would consider this to be “karma” or say that “everything happens for a reason.” Yet I believe that it is always Divine intervention that is at work in our lives every moment.

How Do The Small Things Count

When that little bee is able to continue pollinating, think of how many more flowers will grow. Smiling at a fellow human who appears to be sad has an uplifting effect. Visiting someone in the hospital or ringing their phone to ask how they’re doing shows you care.

A simple card in the mail for no particular reason other than “I’m thinking of you” can have a great impact on someone who is otherwise lonely and feeling forgotten.

If your supermarket offers bags of non-perishable items to your local food shelf for a small donation, consider picking one up. There are many families in need.

The Power Of Prayer

A small prayer has more power than you know. As Jesus was surrounded by a band of men from the chief priests and Pharisees, He said this: (Matthew 26:53,54)

53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

54 But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?

Holding a door for someone, and paying it forward when you are the recipient of a kind gesture can go a long way to creating that ripple effect our heavenly Father rejoices over.

What Goes Around Really Does Come Around

I am sure everyone has heard this saying, yet once I began to study God’s word, this took on a whole new meaning. I now understand this in its true context.

It isn’t “karma” that comes back around to either bless us or curse us. It is the Holy Spirit, and when He convicts us of a wrong-doing it will surely feel like a curse yet it is meant to get our attention, to turn us away from the wrong path.

Blessings are not good luck. Nothing is by chance when it comes to God, and when you drop that spare change into the red collection pot at your local grocery store you can be sure that there will be a reward for you later on.

One thing that is proven over and over: You can never out-give God!

2 Corinthians 9:7
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”

Make the small things count! Let that impatient driver behind you pass and wish him/her well! Smile at the scowling checkout person and say “Have a blessed day!”

Plenty of times I have waved people in front of me at the checkout and yes, I have been the recipient of this as well.

Each year I crochet hats and scarves to put into our giving box in front of our church during the cold months and each year this box empties. I will buy gloves and mittens on sale as well.

Does your community have a giving box for the less fortunate?

Make the small things count, because the small things count in many ways!

May the Lord bless and keep you, Amen.

Does God know your heart? He does. Will it be enough to get into heaven?
