March 1st (at sunset) begins a global day of unplugging. It will continue until sunset on March 2nd.

What exactly does this mean? To many folks, it means 24 hours away from their social media and other online activities. Is this even possible?

Depending on your age, you will either welcome a day of being unplugged from the world or a sense of panic will ensue the first moments of being away from your device(s). This is called fear of missing out and believe it or not, FOMO is crippling many young adults, yet nobody is immune except for those who have never held an online presence and have no desire to explore the world wide web via the internet highway.

Are these elusive beings out there? They are! Here is what I discovered while researching this topic as of 2021:

  • 7% of U.S. adults do not use the internet
  • 25% of adults aged 65 and older reported never going online
  • Of those with a high school education or less, it was 14%

Income was shown to have an impact as well, with those earning $30,000 or less reporting no internet usage, and it was interesting to note that 1% of those earning $75,000 or more do not go online. I assume that they are too busy spending their money or relaxing on the white sands of those secluded beaches to care about what’s online.

Then and Now

2021 was 3 short years ago as of this writing on March 1, 2024. What are the trends now?

The offline population has indeed been shrinking, and those who never go online hold a mere 4% in the age 50-64 bracket. 15% of the American population are smartphone-only internet users. This is not surprising when you look at how large the screens are becoming, and a smartphone is a hand-held computer at your fingertips.

In case you missed it, a previous blog post on FOMO is available to read now:

The Global Day of Unplugging from Societies View

As I watched a popular news program this morning it was directed at this day of unplugging and as I watched it became very clear to me that society has no idea what this should be about. It also occurred to me that Satan has his hand in making it into the opposite of what it should focus on.

There were plenty of good ideas on what to do instead of being on social media or playing games online. Plenty of activities were listed instead of texting or chatting with friends, such as playing an outdoor family game, going hiking or biking, or having a picnic with family.

One of the suggestions made me realize just how far Lucifer has taken this, and it was suggesting to your children to write a letter to their idol. Allow me to point out God’s first commandment, which is:  1. I am the Lord your God. Thou shalt have no other Gods before me. 2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images. Find the full ten commandment in Exodus 20:1

I was saddened and disappointed when not one word was mentioned about spending time with Jesus on this global day of unplugging and it showed me just how disconnected the world is from God.

What This Day Of Unplugging Means to Me

As a Sabbath keeper, this day of unplugging is a weekly occurrence for me and 21,912,161 others who follow our Lord and Savior Jesus. Each Friday evening at sunset I turn off my secular activities of work and focus on our creator. I begin this special day with a prayer of thanks and praise to our heavenly Father.

My activities involve Jesus and studying the Bible, fellowship with church family, and focusing on the creation week and God’s plan of salvation when this world ends, and this will be soon. I know Jesus will return soon and the only way to be among those who are redeemed is by having a daily relationship with Him.

The Sabbath is a special day for Christians because God Himself set it apart, knowing that rest would be needed from our labors and He so desires to commune with us specially. I learned the truth about which day should be kept Holy by studying God’s word. It is so plain to see that I am perplexed as to why so many are set on keeping Sunday when God Himself set the day and that will never change.

A good resource to learn more about God’s Holy Day is by visiting Sabbath Truth

If you do not own a Bible, I suggest a giant print Bible from amazon

As this unplugging approaches, I am running out of time to finish this post and get it out to you, so I wish everyone a time of reflection in the next 24 hours, granted that you do unplug, as I know I will. Have a blessed Sabbath!
