 Why Diets Fail

whole food plant based
whole food plant-based living

I can honestly tell you right here that I am an expert when it comes to “diets” and weight loss supplements. Each time a new program came out I was right on it because they were convincing about how I would see results in 30 days or less or get a full refund. I finally know why diets fail and share it with you today.

Each time a new supplement was advertised I was convinced that this would be the magic pill that would finally melt away all of my problems. Each time I was let down and was then convinced that being overweight was just my new normal. After all, I am nearing my 60″s and we all know that the older you get the harder it is to lose weight, right?

The Older You Get The Harder It Is to Lose Weight-Right?

WRONG!

It is not and I am proof that you can be any age and lose weight! I understand there are extreme circumstances as to why it would be hard to lose weight. For instance, if you have a genetic disorder or thyroid problems it may be harder to lose weight. I insisted upon blood tests to discover the reason why I could not lose weight. A metabolic panel was taken, thyroid…you name it, and they were all normal. I walked up to 5 miles at a time and exercised nearly every day yet not one pound would come off. I was becoming depressed and ashamed as well.

I had stopped drinking alcohol and smoking a few years before this, so I even wondered if I should pick up smoking again because some people say they gained weight after quitting but that was VERY fleeting. NOTHING will ever make me pick up another cancer stick ever again!

The Standard American Diet

In my case, it was the standard American diet (SAD) that was not only preventing me from losing weight but adding to it as well!

I wasn’t over-eating. I would often skip breakfast because I was never hungry in the morning. I would have a lunch meat sandwich with lettuce and some chips for lunch and I loved chicken and would often have chicken potatoes and veggies for supper then a snack in the evening, which consisted of salty or sweet, depending on how I felt. Typical, right? I would cook chili, lasagna, roast, and meatloaf which are considered normal meals, and I would have healthy portions. So what was preventing me from losing weight?

The Standard American Diet

My energy level has increased, and my health is top-notch compared to just one year ago. No longer am I on the verge of diabetes and my blood pressure has drastically improved. I am not on any prescription medications for ANYTHING. I am healthy and happy for the first time in years! I owe it all to Kim at Simply Plant-Based Kitchen. And I am proud to help promote her business here on my website.

DON’T DIET               Join this free class today!

Really? Absolutely! The only reason why all diets fail is because it is a diet and not a lifestyle. So what is the difference between a diet and a lifestyle?

A Diet:

  • Is restrictive

Must count calories/weigh food

  • Often lacks variety

The same boring rotating menu

  • Stressful

Reaching that goal each week

A LIFESTYLE

  • It has no restrictions except those made by YOU

For instance, I choose to eat only whole food plant-based foods. (WFPB)

  • Variety is never-ending. Even when living in WFPB, I never run out of options!
  • No stress! I know that whatever I am eating is wholesome so I don’t have to worry about calories or most portions when eating WFPB.

When you change your lifestyle, not your “diet” you are setting yourself up for success because the expectations are removed to the point where you no longer need to step on the scale daily or wonder if you’ve had too many carbs or salt, or if this food will be too many points.

When your lifestyle changes so do your habits. The only choice you need to make is what kind of lifestyle you want to live. For instance, is longevity what you are striving for? Anti-inflammatory? Healthy bones for those later years? What kind of lifestyle would support all of these goals and more?

A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IS ALL YOU NEED

What is considered a healthy lifestyle you ask? Here are the main ingredients in a nutshell:

Whole foods have only one ingredient: themselves. For example, a potato is a whole food, but if you slice it up, remove its natural water content, and throw it into a box it is now considered a processed food. Any food that comes in a box or resides in the freezer section is processed, and the longer the list of ingredients the more processed it is.

The Dangers of Consuming Processed Food is REAL

According to the article above from Harvard Health Publishing, there are over 30 reasons to avoid all processed foods and cancer is one of them. Could the rise in mental illness be attributed to what you eat? Cardiovascular disease and obesity are on their list. Click the link above and read for yourself. Hint* links are in red*

Eating a plant-based diet has changed my life by turning my health around. I have lost 20 lbs and continue to lose weight at a healthy rate, which means my success rate is very high as I continue this healthy lifestyle.

Every plant-based recipe  I cook is simple, highly nutritious, and protein-rich. Plant-based meals aren’t as boring as some people believe! Have you ever had cauliflower wings?  These are very delicious and you would think it is a boneless chicken wing when it is cauliflower. Even your kids will love them! Here is the recipe:

CAULIFLOWER WINGS

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cauliflower cut into florets
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour or chickpea flour for gluten-free
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup unsweetened plant milk
  • 3/4 cup of your choice of vegan teriyaki sauce or other

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 425°F and line 2 baking sheets with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
    • Cut the cauliflower into bite-size pieces & set aside.
    • mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl(flour & spices). Add the milk and whisk until there are no lumps.
    • Add the cauliflower florets to the batter in batches. Be sure they are fully coated. Shake off the excess batter of each piece & place them on the baking mats. Bake for 20 minutes.
    • While the cauliflower is baking, you can make the Teriyaki Sauce.
    • Remove the cauliflower from the oven, and place the florets in a large mixing bowl. Drizzle the Teriyaki sauce (or any BBQ sauce or Frank’s Red Hot Sauce) over the cauliflower and then toss with a spoon until all the florets are fully coated.
    • Spread the sauced cauliflower wings on the baking sheets again, baking an additional 20 minutes.
    • Let cool for 5 minutes and serve with your favorite vegan ranch dressing or sprinkle with sesame seeds.
