DIY Privacy Screen For a Deck Rail

DIY Privacy Screen For A Deck Rail

We had a lot of work done on our house recently, which left me with a problem: Privacy. One large tree disappeared from next to my deck, along with a cedar bush and other miscellaneous shrubberies, which I was not too disappointed to get rid of. Now I have wide open space to fill in with more desirable plants! Now what I needed was a DIY privacy screen for a deck rail, because lacked the funds to buy one. I came up with a simple solution.

Materials Needed For DIY privacy deck screen

  1. Trellis ladder
  2. Fake Foliage.
  3. Plastic report covers.
  4. Glue Gun and glue sticks and of course scissors.
  5. A 1″ thick board for mounting privacy screen, plus the length of your ladder
  6. Electric/battery-powered drill
  7. 1/4″ drill bit for pilot holes
  8. Screws
  9. Tape measure
  10. Marker
  11. Straight edge for marking

Assembling Privacy Screen

*Note: This particular screen is not meant to be a permanent structure. I live in Northern Minnesota where winter weather is harsh. In a milder climate, this may hold up quite well, as this trellis ladder was already weather-proofed.

Let’s have some fun! First, plug in your glue gun. while that is heating up, remove the binders from the packaging and slide the plastic pieces off. This is pretty thick plastic as you can see. I used fake leaves, but feel free to add whatever elements you want to this project.

Gluing- or use contractors stapler

Let’s run a thick bead of glue down the inside left edge of the trellis and make sure the binder will open downwards, attach it to the ladder. Do the same on the right edge. Add a spot of glue to your leaves or other medium and put these inside the binder. Now glue the binder together to seal in your decorative medium. You can skip this and not use any decoration, but I like the effect.

Next, run a thick bead of glue over the right edge of the first binder and continue as above, making sure your binders open downwards. This trellis ladder is 72″. since this was a spur of the moment type project, I only purchased 4 packs of binders with 3 per package, and so I cut the last two in half to fill in the remaining spaces. This is also an option. The plastic is thick enough that a single layer will still appear as frosted glass.

Alternatives

If you are handy and have the tools, plexiglass is the ultimate way to go with this privacy screen project, especially if looking for a very permanent structure. However, mine was made to be detached and stored over the winter, plus I am frugal. This project cost me less than $30.

Once you have all of your “panes” in place, we need to drill pilot holes so the wood will not split. Lay the privacy screen on its side and drill a pilot hole on the bottom of each rung that will be attached to your board.

Measure

Let’s measure the distance between the pilot holes.  We will mark these on the center of your mounting board using a straight edge.

Attach privacy screen to board

Beginning in the middle, attach the privacy screen to the board. This makes it easier to position the privacy screen over your pilot holes as you go along. Work from the center to the right or vice versa.

Finish

Now choose where your privacy screen for your deck will go, center it onto the rail and attach it to the rail with a few screws and you are done. Enjoy! Add embellishments as desired, imagination overload will take over! I hope you found this DIY privacy screen for deck rail useful.
