Let’s jump right into this controversial subject: Did Jesus drink alcohol or fermented wine? First, are you kidding me right now? Ok, I have to admit that before I became a Christian and began studying Bible truth, I was led to believe that Jesus turned water into fermented wine at the wedding:
John 2:9
6And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. 7Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
9When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. 11This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. 12After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.
Jesus was pure
This was not fermented wine that Jesus created, but pure grape juice of the highest quality! Was He not the purest human on earth when He was incarnated, free of all sin and evil? Why then, would He create one of the very things he not only discouraged but abhorred?
- Ephesians 5:18 – And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit
- Proverbs 20:1 – Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
- Galatians 5:21 – Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
- Isaiah 5:22 – Woe unto [them that are] mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink
- Isaiah 5:11 – Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, [that] they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, [till] wine inflame them!
Pretty clear that the Bible does not support drinking alcohol, yet some would twist the Lord’s words, as in this verse:1 Timothy 5:23 – Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities. Do you really think that this verse says to drink fermented wine to soothe your stomach? I think not.
1 Peter 5:8 – Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour
Satan would have us believe a lie
Yes, Satan, aka Lucifer, the dragon, or the devil would have us all believe that it is okay to drink alcohol when God clearly does not want His children to be defiled by it. Not even in “moderation” as so many condone! I used to drink a lot of beer back in the day and have since left this behind me. I used to smoke too. Not anymore, praise God for the victory! My dear friends, Jesus was free of sin when He walked this earth or He never would have fulfilled The Father’s plan of salvation at the cross. We as His followers are expected to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice while we walk this earth:
- Romans 12:1 – I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service.
- 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
The Least We Can Do
When we learn Bible truth on these subjects, does it make you want to turn away from God or do your best to please Him? When I discovered the truth, I felt convicted to change and turned to Jesus for help. I want to be among His redeemed when He returns to earth, don’t you? Yes, He is going to return and very soon!
The very least we can do is to care for our bodies as the temples they are. The Holy Spirit resides within each of His followers and this is what gives us the strength to do God’s will and reject Satan as Jesus did out in the wilderness for those forty days.
The closer we get to God, the better life becomes! He blesses us in ways only His children can be blessed!
Would you like to become closer to Him? Read His Word every day. Spend time with our Father and He will embrace you! Until next time, make each and every day count for something!
