Did everyone survive Friday the 13th? I personally am not superstitious, though I will admit that in my earlier years I was influenced by such “old wives tales” as “step on a crack, break your mother’s back”…remember that one? I was in grade school when one of my classmates began chanting this as she stomped on every crack in the sidewalk. It was pretty obvious that she was not happy with her mother that day!
Have you ever broke a mirror? I believe that when we allow these silly superstitions into our lives we can actually create our own “bad luck”. Our thoughts can turn into actions which we will then blame on the superstition. I feel bad for our certain colored feline friends who are abandoned or never adopted simply because they are black cats. And worse, during the full moon phase and on Halloween when these cats go missing for unholy reasons.
I used to avoid walking under ladders until the realization struck me that it is merely unsafe to walk under a ladder, especially if someone is on it. The simple act of walking under a ladder will not bring bad luck. If you happen to bump it however, it could be disastrous for the person above.
How about the good luck superstitions? Find a four leaf clover, carrying the lucky rabbit’s foot, if a bird poops on you or your car it is a sign of good fortune. Really? I have had plenty of bird droppings on my car. Perhaps I should have left it there… what would you think if someone came behind you and spilled water..on purpose. In serbia they spill water behind those family and friends who are about to take a trip or important test. Wouldn’t this be a little dangerous for the next person who approaches from behind?
I wonder who was the first person to bring life to these superstitions. Have you ever gotten a chain letter in the mail? Were you too apprehensive to simply toss it in the garbage after opening it? Did it give you pause, wondering what would happen? And these days of social media where a message is forwarded because if you don’t you will break the chain of good luck.
What are your thoughts on superstitions? I would love to hear them. Until next time, make each and ever day count for something!
